Notes from Underground – Most read articles for the week ending Nov 30

By Darren Atwater | Sunday 1 December 2024

The most read non-Tom article last week is Golden Prospect – Late In Year 2024 Tipfest Update As Subscription Deadline Looms by Nigel Somerville at number 1 or number 2 including Bearcasts.

The most-read ShareProphets articles this week were:

  1. Golden Prospect – Late In Year 2024 Tipfest Update As Subscription Deadline Looms
Fully listed precious metals investor Golden Prospect (GPM) was my buy tip for 2024. At 39.25p per share, it is up a useful 40% thus far……and then there is that subscription issue shortly, at 35.94p. I’ve elected to take my shares, so fingers crossed I’ll get a nice bonus in a few days’ time.

  2. BREAKING: Peel Hunt warns of £2 billion AIM IHT own goal by Rachel from Customer Services
Peel Hunt's head of research Charles Hall has this morning warned that scrapping IHT relief on AIM shares will not raise £100 million to save the NHS as predicted by Rachel from Customer services but will in fact slash tax revenues by £1.1 billion this tax year rising to £2 billion per annum thereafter. You do not need to be an economist to see that this is a spectacular own goal.

  3. Golden Tuesday Bonus Bearcast: News from Amaroq and Ariana
Both have positive news which as a holder of both Ariana (AAU) and Amaroq (AMRQ) pleases me. But only one flicks the share price dial short term. Long term I explain the potential upside in both, it is all about risk and reward. as an older man I prefer lower risk lower potential reward but you might float on a different boat.

  4. The View From The Montana Log-Cabin As Gold Attempts To Stage A Comeback
Gold closed the week at $2,716 – a country mile better than last week’s depressing $2,562, back above the $2,700 mark and back within striking distance of yet another all-time high. Gold stocks responded very positively, as can be seen on the chart of Gold against the mining ETFs GDX (majors), GDXJ (juniors) and GOEX (explorers).

  5. Severfield – from “market conditions are showing signs of improvement” to a ‘market conditions’ profit warning in less than four months, and worse!…
Structural steel company Severfield (SFR) has announced results for its half-year ended 28th September 2024 headlined “Revenue and underlying profit growth, diversified order books, challenging market backdrop but remain well-positioned in markets with positive long-term growth trends”. So why a current share price response to below 55p, down more than 38%?!

  6. Does Valuation matter? Ask a failed fund manager
No not me silly, it is disgraced Neil Woodford. But I am afraid to say that i agree with him completely, caveat emptor especially when it comes to US equities!

  7. Restore plc – ten months trading update, still a recovery Buy
Restore plc (RST) has issued a trading update including that its “actions to improve margins are progressing well” and that “cash generation remains strong”. How encouraging is it overall from a 265p share price?

  8. Strix – “Trading Update” = Profit Warning (natch!) and has there really been “significant progress” on the balance sheet?…
Strix Group (KETL) has issued a “trading update” including that for kettle controls it “has maintained its dominant market position with stable market share” and that the launch of a new low-cost control has been well received as well as that “Billi (filtration systems) is performing well with a positive increase in sales in Europe following successful progress on the division's geographical roll-out strategy”. So what of a share price, already down from above 80p in September, currently further down towards 55p?

  9. MicroStrategy - A possible Bitcoin short
If you think that Bitcoin is overpriced at just under $100,000 then a possible stock to short is MicroStrategy (Nasdaq:MSTR) at $422 which describes itself thus: “MicroStrategy® is the world's first and largest Bitcoin Treasury Company.” You would be following the strategy of a well-respected short seller Citron Research which initiated a short a few days ago. Its thesis was that MicroStrategy’s market capitalisation was far to far ahead of the value of its bitcoin portfolio.

  10. EXPOSE: BWA Group - a group that doesn’t consolidate its subsidiaries, why accounting policies can materially impact reported results
I covered this in bearcast on Monday but now for some more detail, a useless company offers a useful lesson for all non accountants.

The most listened-to Bearcasts this week were:

  1. Tom Winnifrith Bonus Bearcast: greatly cheered by NOT speaking to 'arry Adams or Steve O'Hara
On the basis of my non conversations I am ever happier holding both Kefi Gold & Copper (KEFI) and Optibiotix (OPTI) but on the latter the case for buying now becomes almost unanswerable.

  3. Tom Winnifrith Bonus Bearcast: Optibiotix, Skins, what a journalist is meant to do, transparency, Lemming and Gary Newman
I really am rather pissed off by the reaction to me just doing what a journalist is meant to do and others wilfully misinterpreting what I said or believe. For Christmas I hope that Santa gives Gary Newman a new calculator not that he has been a very good boy today.

  4. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: does Optibiotix need an FD and time to short bitcoin?
I discuss the staffing needs of Optibiotix (OPTI) and small caps in general and bitcoin vs gold

  5. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: Bit political, bit political..I'd rather eat my own toes
In today's podcast I end with an event the Mrs is going to but which I shall pass on. Before that Scholium (SCHL) and the maths of leaving AIM if you are a good company, Probiotix (PBX) , Amaroq (AMRQ), I bet anyone a fiver it will not exist in 5 years, Energy Pathways (EPP) and Evil Banksta and Beacon Energy (BCE) and pointless cash shells.

  6. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: one month to Christmas
Starting with the festive note I look at Kingfisher (KGF), Hemogenyx (HEMO), Georgina Energy (GEX), Powerhouse Energy (PHE), ECR Minerals (ECR) and BWA (BWAF)

  7. Tom Winnifrith bearcast: egg on boat race time but for once not mine!
In today's podcast I discuss broker research, walls of cash, Amaroq (AMRQ) and the great one getting his sums muddled up, Great Western Mining (GWMO) and Victoria (VCP)

  8. Tom Winnifrith bonus bearcast: just a few more thoughts on Microstrategy vs Golden Prospect Precious Metals
Following on from my earlier piece on Microstrategy (Nasdaq:MSTR) and bitcoin I look at its valuation and also that of Golden Prospect Precious Metals (GPM). You may say its apples and pears but it tells you something does it not?

  9. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: on the nature of fraud however small
I start with signs of why I think we shall see peace in Ukraine soon and the implications for certain stocks. I focus on Eurasia (EUA). Then its Gary's new g/f Louise Haigh and the nature of fraud. Then EnergyPathway (EPP), Argent (RGT) and Alien Metals (UFO)

  10. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: the three serpents in the Helium bubble garden of Jerry Keen
In today's bearcast I end with a plunging Russian Rouble and start with the three helium serpents floated by Jerry Keen this year: Georgina (GEX), Pulsar (PLSR) and today's dog run by a liar Helix (HEX). In between I look at Oracle (ORCP) and the antics of David Lenigas and also at Strix (KETL)

  11. Tom Winnifrith bonus bearcast: what should Father Christmas bring Gary Newman and Lucian Miers this Christmas?
For the former the AIM Rule Book, for the latter an anti cynicism pill and a reality check. The podcast covers three stocks you and I know very well.

  12. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: when did it become acceptable to tell lies?I feel this weekend that I have been lied to. There is a lot of lying about in all walks of life. I ponder a few examples from this week and ask when did this all become acceptable?
