Notes from Underground – Most read articles for the week ending Dec 21

By Darren Atwater | Sunday 22 December 2024

The most read non-Tom article last week is The View From The Montana Log-Cabin As Gold Recovers … And Then Falls Away Again by Nigel Somerville at number 1 or number 4 including Bearcasts.

The most-read ShareProphets articles this week were:

  1. The View From The Montana Log-Cabin As Gold Recovers … And Then Falls Away Again
Gold closed the week at $2,648 – marginally up on last week’s $2,633 but still in nomansland. However, this is just part of the story as it marched up over $2,720 leaving me wondering if all this correction stuff was just nonsense and $3,000 was back on the cards for year-end. But from there, it went back down a ski-slope. And so the correction continues …

  2. Zenova – announces “restocking order… driven by strong interest from end customers”. Attempted ramptastic?
Describing itself as “a leading innovator in fire suppression and temperature management solutions”, Zenova Group (ZED) has issued a “pleased to announce… restocking order”, emphasising that it “is driven by strong customer demand and reflects a consistent pattern of re-orders for Zenova's paint products, with restocking taking place at least every six months”. So what of a current muted share price response at 0.55p?

  3. Videndum – is “some signs of gradual improvement” a sufficient recovery?…
Most recently writing on technology products for ‘content creation’ company Videndum (VID), in September with the shares falling below 230p I concluded that its cost reductions looked quite a desperate measure and to avoid/sell. The shares most recently closed at 256p and today a “Pre-Close Trading Update” including that it is “seeing some signs of gradual improvement”, so what of a current share price response down to around 210p?

  4. Ariana – Crocked, Or Storm In Teacup
Last week proposals emerged to hand 26% of mines to the Zimbabwe government. That saw shares in AIM-listed Ariana Resources (AAU) crunched back down to 2.05p, a market capitalisation of £38 million. For a company with a profitable operation in Turkey, a stack of interesting-looking prospects and the Dokwe project in Zim already carrying a NPV of $160 million, that looks very harsh indeed. But have rumours out of Zim crocked the company?

  5. Video the BBC does not want you to see: Sir Starmer and the Granny Harmers
Apparently this is topping the download charts, all profits go to help old folks charities and yet the BBC seems to be refusing to play it. I can't think why. Enjoy

  6. A Christmas winner from Dominic Frisby – Right Wing Woman
The word on the street is that Father Christmas has a stocking gift for myself from the Dominic Frisby store as a reward for being so good this year. Meanwhile the great man has a new song out which is superb although, for some reason, the Mrs. is not a fan! Enjoy.

  7. In Black and white: Rachel from customer services puts folks on the dole
A profits warning from Shoe Zone (SHOE) will be gutting for shareholders as the stock is off by 44% at just 80p. Steve called this correctly and is justifiably smug today. The real losers are staff who will be losing their jobs just in time for Christmas and the company does not pull its punches: the finger of blame is rightly pointed at Rachel from Customer Services. One again “Labour is not working”.

  8. BREAKING: Pennpetro Energy – after Chairman Big Dave Lenigas last month, now also CEO “has resigned with immediate effect”!
Most recently from Pennpetro Energy (PPP), on 27th November CEO Tom Evans was “very pleased” that the company’s new Texas operator, Globalvision, had completed technical studies and advised a work-over rig was scheduled to arrive on site in the weeks after US Thanksgiving to commence oil production works on an accelerated development program. Today, at 3:27pm from Pennpetro, “Resignation of Chief Executive”!

  9. Jubilee Metals – states “uncertainty” whether guidance production volumes will be met, but that doesn’t look likely now. Sell
Jubilee Metals* (JLP) has issued an announcement including that there has been a “noticeable increase” in the number of hours of production lost at its Roan facilities in Zambia caused by power outages across the national grid, though seeking to reassure that Munkoyo and Project G mining operations remain on target and noting enhanced terms for the acquisition of a large waste rock project.

  10. Visual Aid: Copper vs. Oil Demand (1970-2040)
In this graphic, we illustrate how copper demand is projected to increase over the coming decades, while oil consumption is expected to decrease. The data was compiled by the International Monetary Fund as of October 2024.

The most listened-to Bearcasts this week were:

  1. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: Tiger completes a dream team of scallywags
I am pretty disgusted with the small cap world and discuss Tiger Royalties (TIR), Optibiotix (OPTI), Technology Minerals (TM1), Hydrogen Utopia (HUI), Georgina Exploration (GEX) and Neometals (NMT)

  2. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: words from a genius (Mark Slater) and from a congenital idiot (Simon Botfield)
In today's bearcast I discuss: Jubilee Metals (JLP), Zephyr Energy (ZPHR), Technology Minerals (TM1) the moaning WASPIs, Rachel from Customer Services and her war on jobs and Active Energy (AEV)

  3. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: Its screwed by Africa weekend at Sheriff Towers
The Africa curse strikes my pension fund for the second time in a few days. I am almost at the point of saying that enough is enough at Jubilee Metals (JLP) and discuss why. Then a bit more on Ariana Resources (AAU), Amaroq (AMRQ), Tern (TERN) and Oxford Biodynamics (OBD)

  4. Tom Winnifrith 2nd bonus bearcast: A Christmas fuck you to Shareholders from Steve O'Hara, Neil Davidson and Liam Murray
As an Optibiotix (OPTi) shareholder with a new chainsaw I am very angry.

  5. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: Up 300% today the biggest sell I can remember for ages
I start with a shocking RNS from Technology Minerals (TM1) which has seen its shares soar by 300%. A deep drill shows why they must collapse from here. Then it is Tullow (TLW) where the bidder has disappeared and why I worry about its debt. Finally Conygar (CIC) and wider issues in property especially student property.

  6. Tom Winnifrith bonus bearcast: Christmas comes early, Dave Lenigas to jail over Pennpetro fraud?
A shocking RNS today lays bare that shareholders in Pennpetro (PPP), especially those taking part in two 12p placings were deceived and misled as to the state of a company that now admits it is facing possible insolvency. It says it is investigating past directors, the fuzz should be investigating. Investors have bee defrauded, surely Lenigas should go to jail or, at the very least, never run a listed company again.

  7. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: on a 20 year view are the housebuilders toast? It all depends on immigration
I give reasons why I am bearish on house prices and housebuilding stocks short term but then discuss the elephants in the room of a collapsing UK birth rate and booming immigration. How we as a nation respond to that could see house prices and demand collapse. Or maybe not if we want a massive change in our society. I am not so sure most folks do.

  8. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: my excuse is Jaya's scarf
I start with the reason for a delayed podcast then it is UK base rates, the looming recession and avoiding retail stocks including Next (NXT) and Sosandar (SOS). Then it is on to Victoria (VCP), Jubilee Metals (JLP) and Kavango (KAV)

  9. Tom Winnifrith bonus bearcast: Chill Brands caves to Yankee fraudsters, where next?
To Seth who threatened and harassed FOR the fraudsters this is for you. Where next for Chill Brands (CHLL)? Questions for Swanny and for the auditors ...

  10. Tom Winnifrith Bearcast: Being schooled on finance and investing by a Lemming and by a 22 year old nephew with a tattoo
Both have sought to put me straight today. Both are good folk, well meaning and honest. One (Lemming) usually knows what he is talking about. Today both were 100% wrong.
