At 236p after the interim results to June; despite the government’s abolition of the compulsory annuity rule in exchange for tax relied on such contributions, the market still seems optimistic about dividends and earnings for Legal & General (LGEN).

No issue with the substance of the article, just the introductory paragraph, which is misleading. Osborne did not abolish the compulsion to buy an annuity in the 2014 budget – that happened in April 2011. Since then, drawdown has, in theory, been available to everybody as an alternative to annuiy purchase. In practice, it isn’t suitable for all, meaning that many pensioners have still bought annuities, but the frequently quoted claim that this year’s budget swept away ‘compulsion’ is factually inaccurate.
