Hello Share Freakies. There are those among us who feel that house prices in Britain have peeked. Uncle Tom is one. But I just can’t see it. If one thing drives demand more than anything else it is shortage of supply. And everyone knows that there are simply not enough houses and flats to go around.

TW got caught recently building executive homes in London and accidentally forgetting to put the costly insulation slabs in the wall cavities and in the roof . New owners complained the houses were cold . One new owner bought an endescope camera used for looking inside car engines via the spark plug hole or fuel injector hole . Said owner then drilled a hole in the wall cavity and had a look inside only to rumble the scam of the missing insulation . It became the subject of a very recent TV documentary . Moral ……….. dont expect the local building inspectors to catch defects if you buy a new build these days . There are too few of them and the builders are largely on self cert inspection regimes these days . Its a sample audit at best . I have looked at quite a few new builds from different firms and the quality is really shite these days . They dont even use a spirit level to get the light switchs level ! Some of the joinery on stair case hand rails etc is laughable . You basically buy a piece of shite and then spend 2-3 years re doing all the snags properly yourself . Modern life …….. there is no pride in the job these days .

There’s supply and demand but also the ability to truly afford what one’s trying to purchase (in the absence of housing – or as another poster more fittingly referred to it here – landlord benefit). Even without the new property tax in the Smoke, I just can’t see how the ratios of average (or median) house price to average (or same) salary throughout much of the UK can remain as high as they’ve been for quite some time now. Strikes me as madness.
I was looking at property abroad a few weeks ago (just out of curiosity for the time being) in the country from which you recently returned Malcolm – Italy – and I was gobsmacked for what you could buy in terms of bedrooms, land, outhouses, views and proximity to Florence or Milan, for instance, for the price of the most humble of abodes over here. Included was a cracking four bedroomed detached house with a stunning view of Lake Como. The only downside as far as I could see in this case would be having Madonna as a neighbour (at least for some of the year), but it’s not as if you’d have to hang out with her. Same goes for much of France (and they’re a nuclear power so the defence budget isn’t to blame). Perhaps it’s different with commercial property. Sorry but I think it truly is madness.
Not as mad as women fighting on the front line, though – nice one Cameron, you berk. Supporters of this will no doubt cite examples of women who could throw Tessa Sanderson as far as she could throw a javelin, but to my mind physical ability isn’t the issue (even though such examples should represent good generalisations and this certainly doesn’t). Rather, it’s because of psycho-sociological reasons in the event of their capture by a foe that doesn’t exactly respect the Geneva convention, and before anyone has a -ve knee-jerk reaction to that statement bear in mind that soldiers are fellow members of our society and just contemplate the likely differences in the reactions of fellow members of society to a man punching another in an argument in a bar and to punching a woman in the same scenario (and let’s not be silly or hypocritical about it). Sorry for hijacking this article with this digression but I’ve only just heard about this on the news and needed to vent my spleen a little!
