My esteemed colleague comrade Malcolm Stacey is nothing if not consistent. The great Money Tree worshipper is perennially bullish and once again that is his message today (HERE). But is the Footsie "flying?" I compare it to a 1916 Wisden and it is clearly not. And I point out why even if it breaches 7,000 there is every reason to be bearish rather than bullish.

Tom – you are forgetting dividends and also cherry picking the worst example.
According to a ThisIsMoney article from 30/12/2014, 10,000 invested on 31/12/1999 would have returned the following. If you are going to compare to your Wisden investment then these are the numbers you should be using.
FTSE 100 no dividends £9,137
FTSE 100 dividends reinvested £15,213
FTSE 250 no dividends £23,936
FTSE 250 dividends reinvested £36,306
FTSE Small Cap no dividends £13,635
FTSE Small Cap dividends reinvested £20,005
FTSE All Share no dividends £10,500
FTSE All Share dividends reinvested £17,206

But you too are cherry picking. I was comparing as stated the breaching of 7,000 with the all time high of 2001. The data you use is from 16 months earlier, ie before the bulk of the dotcom boom market. Id love to see the data from the period of the all time high ( the madness of that bubble) thru to today. The returns would be – I suggest – well sub Wisden!

The FTSE100 WILL go through 7000, then evry dimwit, bell-hop and taxi driver will start to buy the market. Investors will chase dividends, as banks and gilts yield nothing. Most shares outside the consumer non-durable and utility and telecoms sectors are NOT historically expensive. Wudnt be surprised to see the FTSE100 somewhere near 8000 by the end of this year and 10,000 by end of 2018. Allowing for inflation since 1999, together with EPS & dividend growth, that’s where it shud b anyway.

According to Wikipedia “the highest value reached to date is 6950.6, on 30 December 1999.” So I was picking the very top of the market as a comparison. Which is why the no dividends number shows a loss.
