Why I am still avoiding buying a new sofa…and/or DFS Furniture shares!

By Chris Bailey | Friday 22 September 2023

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from ShareProphets). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.

Did you see the latest UK retail sales numbers out this morning? Whilst month-on-month sales in August were up 0.4% (versus the -1.2% fall a month earlier), the generally more insightful year-on-year statistic was down 1.4%. I guess the summer weather, holidays and the latest TV/internet excitements all had their impacts but, for me, the big multi-year deviation remains between value and volume. Yes, it matters whether you have pricing power or not. And this brings me onto yesterday’s set of numbers from DFS Furniture (DFS).
