The suggestion from the German paper Der Spiegel is that may well be. The paper has run a full story despite strong suggestions from Avanti Communications (AVN) lawyers that it should not do so. Given Avanti's oft repeated claims that it wins major business from the UK military perhaps it might wish to issue a formal statement. The full article is below.

So not only do we provide the weapons and the fighters we may now provide the telecommunications, all we need now is the banking/financing and we have a complete set.

Slightly reminiscent of IBM providing technology to and assisting the Nazis. Perhaps we should drop a huge Faraday cage over the region if the satellite outfits don’t get their arses in gear, but now I guess I’m just being silly.

But Avanti Communications are not an ISP. They sell capability to ISPs who then package it up to consumers and businesses. I think they are in the wrong part of the supply chain to sort this out.
I also suspect the article hits the nail on the head when it suggests that it suits the intelligence agencies to have most of ISIL’s communications going through a few known ground stations.

Good stuff. So let’s bomb every satellite dish in Aleppo and Raqqa. Should be easy to spot. Do the terrorists also use satellite phones?

Just change the satellite encryption over Syria, we are at war with ISIS after all.
The Yanks have something similar with the GPS system. You can use it on your sat-nav no problems but during time of war they can change the crypto key meaning it will not work for non US military users.
And Tom – aren’t you a member of ISIS (International Shorters In Shares)? :D
