GVC

Goodbye GVC, hello Entain!

You know I have been a fan of GVC (GVC) for a while, observing a couple of weeks ago here that 'the market knows that the online betting genie has left the bottle years ago and the events of lockdown #1 just accelerated the transition...all another lockdown does is accelerate the already ongoing radical estate pruning'.  Yesterday's update from the company under their newish CEO Shay Segev titled 'The Way Forward' reiterated those structural positives.

GVC

Hello ten quid for my GVC shares! So what do I do now?

The good news for my portfolio on Friday afternoon was the news that not one but two bids for gambling name William Hill (WMH) from private equity group Apollo and casino giant Caesars Entertainment.  Sadly I do not own any shares in Hills but - as discussed many times on these pages including in my most recent video chat with Tom here  - I do have some positions in sector peers, most notably GVC (GVC).  As is the way it goes with such newsflow events, sector peers get a bump too.

GVC

Embracing uncertainty and the mad gambling world of GVC

If you wait for everything to line up in an investment opportunity, then often by the time it does you have missed a good chunk of at least the initial move.  Actually - in my experience - it is a good thing when there is a little bit of uncertainty because then you are likely to be going into something with your eyes open.  Just as nothing exists in a vacuum, nothing is flawless.  Life and the markets are both risk-reward games.

GVC

Still gambling on GVC despite the CEO exiting stage left

I do gamble a little bit. No jokes about this being the norm for any investor! But I do have the odd wager. The late Spurs winner against the Gooners a few days back hurt at a fan level, but given it pushed the number of goals above 2.5 it led to a nice wager win. Still...2-1 to Arsenal yesterday evening! My biggest gambling sector position for a couple of years now has been GVC Holdings (GVC)...

GVC

GVC, regulation and doing the opposite to a US hedge fund name

I was more of an observer than a participant in the financial markets on Friday as I was travelling back down south of the border after a brief sojourn in Scotland.  I was not surprised that Hammerson (HMSO) shares fell after it announced more asset sales at a discount which only nudges - rather than dramatically reduces - their material debt burden.   And I read in the press today that all sorts of excitements potentially await in their results this week including a big dividend cut.  Well quelle surprise.

GVC

From my budget hotel room...GVC is still playing a winning hand

As noted yesterday, I am currently enjoying a short stay at one of the Premier Inn locations of Whitbread (WTB). Thumbs up from my personal bottom-up perspective and - as per the above link - you know my positive thoughts on the stock. Now onto another company I have written positively on over the last year and that is GVC Holdings (GVC)…

GVC

More profit warnings...but don't go all defensive

I am not the biggest fans of the large accountancy and consultancy companies but it was quite striking that a new report from EY observed that there 'were more profit warnings from listed companies in the first nine months of 2019 than in any year since 2008'.  And you guessed it - as one of the deadwood press notes - 'the report cites concerns over the economy and delays or cancellations of contracts as the two main causes for companies to miss their forecasts. Brexit was highlighted as the reason for 22% of profit warnings in the three months to September — up from 10% in the first quarter'.

GVC

GVC ups its numbers again!

Oops...they did it again. Fortunately on gambling company GVC (GVC) I am talking about a profit upgrade. Now admittedly the Q3 trading update is talking about a 'pre-IFRS16 ebitda' but it is going up in terms of the full year guidance to £670-680 million from £650m-670 million, which sits nicely with the August upgrade…

GVC

GVC raises numbers but please no more 'number of the beast' share sales!

I have written about GVC Holdings (GVC) a number of times this year, after making it one of my tips of the year back in late December. I have been critical on many occasions this year, predominately because of the ludicrous share sale by the Chair and CEO just days after loving up the full year numbers and prospects. Rather appropriately the share sale was at 666p. The number of the beast, indeed! Today's interim numbers read well on an overall basis...

GVC

I still don't understand why GVC's CEO and Chair dumped so many shares...

I wailed and gnashed my teeth over betting behemoth GVC (GVC) a month or so ago after the company's CEO and Chair dumped a bunch of shares just days after an excellent results publication...which they also loved up in print and voice at the time. Throw in the terse regulatory news statement and correctly the stock dumped afterwards and has not yet recovered. Moving aside from the satanic aspects of selling shares at 666p (and the CEO having 666,666 shares left!), today's trading update represents the start of a rebuilding phase for the company with UK market investors...

as you know I rarely drink. . badly phrased. im trying to say the cash that Amaroq will have to sit on, spend on capex, exploration dividends etc will come from profits it makes after tax which are its retained earnings

Schoolboy howler alert, “the cash comes out of retained earnings”? No it doesnt. You were doing so well up to that point. You sound as though you have been drinking which may be the reason, but as you well know, cash and earnings/profits have nothing to do with each other. Say ten Hail Marys.

Mcap £12M largely underpinned by £9.6M receivable from Recyclus. Or it was until 0700 this morning. What is MNTL left with if Recyclus does go bust / into new hands via liquidation? The largely paper acquisition announced 30 September, and...... er, that's it.That external funder can set whatever terms it likes for the D4E. MNTL either accepts those terms or the funder has the 9 o'clock appointment with the liquidator and can pay its fees and pennies in the pound to the secured creditors, and the liquidator will be duty bound to accept a quick and dirty sale to preserve the jobs.

amount owed to taxman rose from 319k at 30/6/24 to 861 a year later. Given how it has now defaulted on payment plan I think my guess that it is a 7 figure sum is an educated onei agree suspension is subjective. But TM1 would not itself go bust if recyclus did so it is not a pending clarification of ITS final position time yet.

MNTL puts out a RNS using the Adam Reynolds keyboard which you think covers an outstanding winding up petition for "a seven figure sum" (your guess) that it can give no certainty it will see off via an external funder.... and yet you don't believe the shares should be suspended pending clarification of the company's financial position?Whatever you say. You've called for suspension elsewhere over much less.

JRB is ok but personally not the best, to me at least. There are others such as Andrew Maguire, Peter Schiff, Alasdair Macleod who I think have a much clearer view of what is going on, and explain it in a fare more concise way.Sometimes it's not all about charts, but fundamentals. The charts may look bearish for both gold and silver currently in the short term, but if the fundamentals come to the fore with what is actually happening out there, runaway US and world debt, sticky inflation, rising bond yields (they are bullish for gold contrary to popular opinion) and general world disorder, along with two wars, plus the fact that gold and silver miners themselves are throwing off record amounts of cash, it beggars belief that both PM's and the miners will not eventually go on a very bullish run.

I will not argue with your first statement. for the evidence is clear. Yes of course cash spent on capex cannot be used to pay a div but as it moves thru cashflow statement not P&L it does not affect retained earnings. So if AMRQ makes a $200m profit in the 18 months to dec 27 (it could spend $150m on building BA and still pay a div with spare cash and as it would then have retained earnings of $97m. I was only suggesting a nominal 1p per share to start with (so a cost of $6m)

Well, I am a moron then because I assumed the folding cash for asset capex would come out of actual profits in a rush over a couple of years maybe. However it is presented on paper, I thought the actual cash would diminish rapidly leaving less to distribute to shareholders.
