Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. During the past two years I have fought, and eventually won, a battle to get Tesco (TSCO) in Wrexham to take seriously the way that Israeli houmous was plastered with offensive stickers or had pork products placed among it. In the end the manager forced all staff – some of whom had initially shown me outright hostility – to undergo training and the matter was addressed. Then last week I showed HERE how Tesco had itself placed the houmous right next to pork products. What happened next was instructive.
I complained both to the floor manager and to the PLC via its press office. The latter, initially ignored my email so I called and yesterday, it said that In some stores, coleslaw and dips are ranged next to the deli meat range as these products all form part of a picnic and deli ranges.
This belated response wholly ignores the point about a product Jews want to buy being adjacent to pork. It shows a profound insensitivity at a time when Britain’s Jews face attacks. And so this us a FAIL by Tesco and, despite the suggestion of my friend young Will the stockbroker that I should do so, I shall not be buying its shares
Meanwhile back in Wrexham I raised the matter with the floor manager and asked her to raise it with the store manager. And as you can see below, action has been taken. The houmous has been moved along the shelf so it is no longer next to pork. It is a simple step showing that the store does care. So, it will retain my custom.
Why could the PLC not accept that there is an ussue here and just drop a note to all stores to show that it cares too? Why can it not see that product placement is an issue and can be offensive but can be addressed.
