For a couple of years I have battled with staff at Tesco (TSCO) in Wrexham over the way that Israeli products, notably the Sabra Houmous pots, were attacked by Palestinian supporters/Jew haters. Stickers accusing Israel of genocide etc, etc, would be placed on the pots and pork products placed among them. Initially staff either ignored me or in some cases ridiculed me. For all too many, hate crimes against Jews just do not matter.
But I persisted and eventually had a meeting with the store manager who took it seriously. All staff were trained that attacking the houmous in this way was a hate crime. New procedures were put in place. On my weekly shop I make a point of buying the Israeli houmous and if Israeli avocados and peppers are there I buy too. And the shelves are now clean.
But there is a new manager at the store and for some reason the layout has been changed. The Israeli houmous used to be at the far end of the houmous section at the end of the aisle. But as you can see that section has been shifted up a couple of yards for a new section selling….I kid you not:
Pig products, all the hams, pork and other pig products you want. So the kosher houmous now sits less than an inch away, right next to, a section of pig products. Is this just less than an inch away sheer thoughtlessness on the part of Tesco and its new manager or has someone at Tesco taken a deliberate stand to gaslight Jews?
Naturally I found a floor manager and raised the issue. I “hammed it up a bit.” There is almost no Jewish community here so with my Maccabee Tel Aviv hoodie and Zionism in my DNA I am possibly the closest thing the bigots of Wrexham have to a Jew to hate. Wearing an imaginary Yellow Star I discussed attacks on synagogues, ambulances and record anti semitism with the floor manager and explained how, at best, this was just insensitive but in the current climate it feels far worse than that.
She says he will take it up with the new manager. I hope she does. Tesco, of all stores, really should know better. I am raising this matter with its press office and let’s see if at a PLC level it finds this acceptable. I certainly do not!
