You want one gold stock to buy but what? Ten experts say it should be...

Gold seems to be in an uptrend so maybe it is time to get a bit of exposure to the gold sector once more? But how? We adsked ten writers connected to this site and/or speaking at UK Investor show on Saturday if they had to bet the ranch on one stock what would it be?

Comments

  1. What about your friends Liam and Niall’s IMC Exploration which is rumored to be very near an LSE listing!!!

  2. TheMadAccountant

Re Wishbone, would the “commentators” you mention post their reckonings exclusively on bulletin boards?

  3. Calling the Aim Highwayman an expert ( retired drip ….under pressure ) is like calling you the “last bastion of diplomacy in the modern world” . I believe in the rehabilitation of offenders but going that far is un tenable . You might just as well ask Rob Terry for his “gold tip” . What about Van Gorgeous ……….. what have you done with her ? I am getting cold turkey and having thus to rely on gazing fondly on Dr Alice Roberts . What fun it would be to be young again . Back on subject, I insist you print Miss Van Goddess’s gold tip as that might indeed be valuable . See if you can pry it out of her ( the tip I mean ) ( the gold tip stupid )
    (oh paleeese)

  4. I suspect that gold on a 2-3 year horizon is going to significantly outperform most people’s expectations but can well imagine a pull back in the short to medium term.

So, on the basis that the gold price goes up significantly long term, I am looking to buy those companies/instruments most heavily leveraged on the gold price. In terms of producing companies, Anglo Asian probably fits the bill best. Borderline profitability at the moment with significant debt but the head man has a lot of skin in the game so I suspect it will survive to reap the rewards. Shanta Gold is an excellent option. Again, substantial but manageable debt. Will look for them to reduce their hedge strategy if gold is on a obvious run but at the moment it is a sensible approach.

For non-producers go for something with substantial resources. Chaarat fits the bill but International Tower Hill Mines and Exeter Resources are monsters that are highly leveraged to the gold price. I would look to see whether the anticipated pull back materialises though because these last two in particular could get hammered if gold reverses at this point.

In terms of alternative instruments, NUGT or JNUG provide 3 x leverage to GDX and GDXJ. If you are bearish in the short term then DUST and JDST are the equivalent shorts. Should consider options as well. Great leverage!

  5. Would I be allowed to add GPM – Golden Prospect Precious Metals? True it is an investment company, but it will give you exposure to quality Australian Mid-Caps that are not listed on AIM; I’m talking companies such as Evolution Mining and Northern Star Resources. A declining AUD exchange rate against the USD (notwithstanding the recent rally) is extremely bullish for these companies in terms of their cost base.
