Why I shall vote Liberal Democrat in the General Election

We have asked a number of ShareProphets columnists to justify how they are voting next week. We start our series with guest columnist Jonathan Price who explains why he is voting Lib Dem.

  1. Daniel Victor

Nick Clegg is a really likeable chap, and I admire him for the way he stood up to Teresa May,and his opposition to the snoopers’ charter. Two main reasons why I won’t be voting for the Libdems..Firstly,they intend to raise taxes on dividends and lower the threshold for CGT. I believe investors are taxed more than enough already ! Secondly, they want to deny us a referendum on leaving the EU,which I would describe as undemocratic.

  2. The only sensible Liberal Dem is Tim Farron . You forgot to mention the student tuition fee debarcle ………..and I expect your sorry , so sorry . Plus you have Vince “ my wiring is crossed” Cable . A loose cannon and responsible for the massive decline in city standards and the rise in vested interests . They will get wiped off the map . We should have identity cards ……..if you have not committed a crime you have nowt to fear .

  3. They’ll probably lose half their seats… no great loss.

Not sure what they stand for any more to be honest.. they were anti-war but willingly got involved in Libya. Like Wildrides I’m all for ID cards in principle which could also be used as a check for employers, landlords and gov agencies to root out the illegals. I will say one thing in their favour and that is that they’ve stuck with the coalition for the full term which is to their credit as they’re not natural bedfellows to the conservatives. Shame we didn’t get full PR as we’re going to get some sort of coalition anyway, just not with representatives in ratio to voters preferences.

PS Tim Farron is an ####, David Laws was half decent until his skeleton fell out the cupboard.

  4. ID cards? The sooner the better! With these I will know quite easily where to find all the left-handed ginger nuts I want to persuade to work harder for less food and no pay for the good of MY ideological society. As I would know where they live I would also be able to pump castration chemicals into their water supply to stop them re-producing. Ace or what!

And to think I thought most ShareProphets readers were sensible, level-headed libertarians. How deluded I have been.

To serious comment, I used to be a Liberal (pre SDP merger) but now look on in some dismay as I see the current activists have strayed much too far from the Liberal ideals I always took for granted, and seem to be indistinguishable from left wing loonies.

We need a party that realises we need politicians to butt out of anything the state should not be involved in. Limit them to Education, Health, Infrastructure and Defence only, and in the case of the first three, to provide funding only, ensuring the vested interests (Unions, big businees) are held in check and not allowed to abuse the system for their own ends. Not sure how this can be acheived, but making all contracts open-book would be a start.

As to welfare, we need to get back to the original concept – help those who are unable to help themselves, and make it very hard on those who are unwiulling to hep themselves.

With respect to our electoral system, it was designed for a two party system. The current system infringes my right to have who I vote for have a proprtionate influence in the government. Allowing a referendum on such a thing was always going to fail; we should just do it. Having said that, consensus is the father of mediocrity, and democracy is a system where two idiots have more influenct than a genius, so maybe we should scrap democracy and leave it all to the hereditary peers. I am sure that would be better than yet more elected and unelected reprehensilbles sitting in the Hous of Lords.

  5. Blocking ID cards was about the only important thing the Lib Dems did. The idea that Englishmen should have to carry government ID and that we should hear policemen in this country saying ‘papers please’ is just revolting. Anyone who parrots the old cliche that if you haven’t committed a crime, you have nothing to fear, is a complete retard.

  6. It makes little difference which set of morons you vote for.

(Respect for democracy and all that)

  7. King gold
Obviously you have something to hide ……….. judging by the name …… Brinksmatt .

We already have id :- student ID , rail cards, drivers licence , library card , MI5 clearance card . One ID would do , and no one said you had to carry it …….. just produce it like a drivers licence when requested .

    you retard .

  8. MIKE ,

I wish you were standing in my constituency because you would have my vote .

The term “Lib Dem” has become a classical illustration of double speak . They are progressives , i.e. as illiberal and intolerant of diverse opinions as it is possible to be and anti-democratic as their stance on an EU referendum shows .

Let’s not forget that their love of PR is purely for grubby reasons , not because they actually believe in it because they think it is better .
