Photo Article - The reason no articles yesterday, my first training walk for Rogue Bloggers for Woodlarks, schoolboy errors

By Tom Winnifrith | Sunday 5 March 2023

I had hoped that Darren would have added all the photos I sent him from the top of Moel Famau, a large hill the other side of Mold. But, he is not a Good German and I shall sack him later. Instead you can see me below with my chunky two year old daughter Jaya on my back and try to imagine views, stretching miles and miles, out into the Irish sea.

The walking party was myself with Jaya on my back, Joshua, Joshua’s uber fit Godfather Johnny and Johnny’s GF, Sarah. After about fifteen minutes with Jaya on my back my heavy breathing and slow pace persuaded Sarah to take over the carrying of Jaya. She’s a bit Amazonian so even with Jaya strode ahead. Joshua, Johnny and I were left behind. It is a steep 3 kilometre climb and about 200 yards before the end Jaya was wailing, as there was a biting wind, so at that point she went back on my back.

The last 200 yards are very steep and one can lose one’s footing but I made it up with not so little Jaya on my back. The views really are spectacular. But it was cold and windy and we resolved to head down the slightly less steep but a bit longer path. Jaya was on my back, and I managed to curb the complaints by singing various songs to her: Molly Malone, Old Macdonald with the animal names in Welsh, our unwoke version of Row, Row, Row, etc.

Unfortunately, somewhere we took a wrong turn and by the time we got back to the car the six kilometre planned walk had become a nine kilometre walk and it was almost dark. And thus, by the time I had driven everyone home and cooked a splendid supper for us all it was bedtime for me. So no articles on ShareProphets. I apologise but I think it is a fair excuse. I shall catch up today.

Yesterday’s stroll was not a bad first training walk for the Woodlarks 34 mile walk. There is no Moel Famau on that walk and I shall not have Jaya on my back on June 17. I still have three and a half months to build up my training with a walk every weekend and some short walks during the week should get me to a state where I can accompany 79 year old Brian Basham at the back of the pack without the old boy embarrassing me too much.

This is going to be my sixth and final walk. If you want to join the seven rogue bloggers for all or part of that walk on June 17 drop me an email. And how about you sponsor us. So far we are at 1%of target so how about a donation today HERE
