Hello Fellow Share Bashers. The other day I told you how I’d picked five companies for my 21- year-old son Jack’s first share portfolio. But I was a bit miffed when he went off on a ten-day holiday to Denmark, without lodging his first £1000 with the broker. So far my fantastic five tips have gone unused.

Malcolm,
A couple of points you raised that I take a less then rose-tinted view on:
“… Though the Greeks have finalised a deal to increase their loan…”
- This would be another loan they have no chance of ever repaying, right? It hardly solves the problem does it?
“… and that China Syndrome won’t last long, anyway.”
- There are some who would take a different view, such that China clearly has major problems and threatening 6%+ holding major shareholders with death if they sell is hardly the sign of an orderly and functioning free stockmarket. You may also find this RMB devaluation is merely the tip of the iceberg.
The following RealVision TV presentation from late last November, courtesy of Raoul Pal of Global Macro Investor, was probably the most insightful and interesting piece of macro analysis I had the privilege of taking in last year. He recently published a sequel on RealVision, but that sits behind a pay wall.

Speaking for myself, I am currently long USD and 10 year US Treasuries with the expectation of being longer by the Autumn. Just a shame I missed this initial RMB devaluation, because I was on the verge of shorting that against the USD aswell. I suspect I’ll get another good opportunity to put that on, but that position is currently overbought (or oversold, depending on your perspective).
However, I must say I appreciate your optimism – it takes a multitude of views to make a market. ;)
Cheers.
