Brokerman Dan has called in from the Manchester Slums to say that he is not earning £1 a month as the saviour of Sefton Resources (SER) but will be the lowest paid executive on AIM earning just £1 a quarter. Even by the standards of the welfare safari park known as Moss Side that seems a trifle low but we at ShareProphets care and so our writers will tomorrow be gathering in Clerkenwell to record our latest Charity Single #FeedTheSlumBoy. “MANCHESTER is being urged to follow in Liverpool’s footsteps – by bidding to become European Capital of Culture.
Liberal Democrat councillors are to put a motion at the counciil’s budget meeting this morning, arguing the city should get its name down for 2023.
Selection for the title begins in 2016 but they are concerned the preparations should begin now.
Highlighting Manchester’s contribution to the world of culture, from the Halle orchestra to the National Football Museum and the
Cornerhouse, the motion says: “Manchester is already home to remarkable cultural activity and talent and would be the ideal European Capital of Culture in 2023.
“The city would be able to put on a world-class series of events and attractions for residents and visitors and would be best placed to ensure they have a lasting legacy for communities.”
It calls on the council’s chief executive, Sir Howard Bernstein, to investigate how the council could go about putting together a winning bid.
The last English city to bear the title was Liverpool, in 2008 – resulting in a £750m boost to its local economy, according to the Liberal Democrats.
It saw visitor numbers soar by more than a third, alongside increased arts audiences and ‘massive amounts of positive media coverage that
helped change perceptions’ of the city, they say.
Councillors argue Manchester could similarly enjoy ‘considerable cultural, social and economic benefits and legacies’ if successful.
European Capital of Culture was established in 1985 and since then has taken in more than 40 cities, including Athens, Tallinn, Stockholm and
Glasgow.
Since 2011 there have been two each year, with the bidding process beginning roughly six years before they actually hold the title.
The aim is not only boost arts scenes but also help regeneration and strengthen cultural ties across the continent.
Chorlton Lib Dem Councillor Victor Chamberlain, who is putting forward the motion, said: “Manchester is an amazingly cultural city and would put on a series of ground breaking and unique events as European Capital of Culture in 2023.
“The opportunity to host a European Capital of Culture would provide Manchester with an enormous opportunity to generate considerable cultural, social and economic benefits and legacies.
“You just have to look to Liverpool to see how beneficial it would be. The city saw a £753.8m boost to the local economy, millions of visitors and people’s perceptions of the city transformed.
“This is our opportunity to create jobs, investment and regeneration in Manchester and a legacy to last for decades.”
John Leech, Withington MP and Lib Dem culture spokesperson, said: “I am supporting this bid because Manchester is a hotbed of cultural activity and talent and would be the ideal European Capital of Culture in 2023.
“This title would help take us to a truly world class level and make our city an even better place to live.”
Well if Liverpool and Glasgow can hold the title why not? Maybe Clerkenwell could put in a competing bid, after all it does boast a fine Italian restaurant, which routinely attracts some of the great names in the business community to come together for highly cultured evenings of fine wine and pizza.

I have it on good authority, (and personal experience) there are a number of shit-holes south of Manchester, London being the Capital. On the upside for Manchester, it’s jewel is The Theatre of Dreams.
