Hochschild Mining (HOC) has issued its “Q1 2025 Production Report” including, “remain confident in a recovery in production during the second half of the year and reaffirm our full-year production guidance”. So how’s the latest performance from this South America producer?
As record gold price excitement further builds in Nigel Somerville’s Montana Log-Cabin, we already have various production exposure to the metal on this website as well as development/exploration exposure. However, on our longer-term focused N50 website, we also have some material silver exposure via FTSE 100 Fresnillo (FRES) – shares in which are, at 920p, up more than 18% from a last year high in October and up 48% in 2025 to-date. Meanwhile, despite a good rise following recent results, for shares in smaller peer Hochschild Mining (HOC), a 235.5p offer price compares to above 240p reached last October and only 10% up in 2025 to-date. As gold and silver price excitement further builds, the following is why we can see a 350p+ share price here and potentially well above that on real sector excitement developing.
Political risk is always hard to gauge, and where it does start to become a potential issue for a company, it is rarely clear in advance just how much of a problem it could be. The political risk in Peru increased significantly earlier this year when left wing president Pedro Castilla came to power, especially for mining and oil companies as he had promised to heavily tax foreign companies operating there.
At the moment most of the focus on commodities that I have been seeing has been on gold and oil, and what people are forecasting for the coming months and longer term. But I suggest we are missing a great opportunity here.
Silver has been incredibly volatile this year with large swings, but it is now back at a level where I can see a good chance of a bounce coming, and that in turn offers upside on producers of the precious metal.
Other than a few months around the start of the year, we are now seeing silver back at its lowest levels since mid-2009, and I can see a strong bounce coming soon.
