Atalaya Mining (#ATYM) – “secondary placing… Trafigura… exited its shareholding”

As much as I have been bullish on the price of copper and predicted that it would have a strong run during 2025, I suspect that it might be starting to get ahead of itself after the recent price rises which saw it mark a record high in London last week at a price of $11,146/t.
I tipped then AIM-listed Atalaya Mining (ATYM) at around 332p way back in December 2023 for another run at £4 per share as the company was planning to get itself into the FTSE250 (with the boost of tracker fund demand). It made the target around 4 months later and I gleefully took profits – but what about the FTSE250?
Back on 3rd December, a Sunday, I suggested that AIM-listed Atalaya Mining (ATYM) was worth a flutter for a re-rate to come. The shares had closed the previous Friday at 327p and opened on the Monday at 332p. My thinking was that with the company planning to move to the main market and changing its domicile as part of the process, allowing trackers to take a position as it surely headed for the FTSE250, it would create additional buying pressure which would move the shares northwards.
I suggested AIM-listed Atalaya Mining (ATYM), formerly EMED Mining (EMED), as being worth a flutter at 327p at the beginning of December. This was ahead of a planned move to the main market and the re-registration of the company to allow its inclusion in the FTSE250 which I saw as an opportunity to make a few quid on a re-rating. Since then, the move has been delayed, copped price has slipped a little and the company has announced Q4 2023 production and the shares, having peaked at 372p a few days after my suggestion, have slipped back to 316p. So stick or twist?
I suggested that AIM-listed Atalaya Mining (ATYM) was worth a short-term flutter on Sunday 3rd December. The market capitalisation was then £457 million, since when it has moved on to £523 million (last seen) – a gain of around 14%. My thinking was that its proposed move to the main market alongside being re-registered in order to qualify for inclusion in FTSE indexes would see a re-rating. Well, so far, so good. But this morning there came a fly in the ointment.
AIM-listed Atalaya Mining (ATYM) announced on Friday a number of historical related party transactions. Oopsadaisie! The company is planning to move to the main market shortly and my suspicion is that the issues were identified as part of that process. The good news is that it has come clean.
Atalaya Mining (ATYM) states it is pleased to announce its quarterly and nine-month results for the period ended 30th September 2021, with it emphasising “another strong quarter… robust operational performance, combined with strong copper prices, has seen our EBITDA for the first nine months of 2021 more than triple from the amount generated during the same period of 2020”. So what of a now more than 400p share price?
Atalaya Mining (ATYM) has published a third quarter update including that it is now increasing its production guidance for the year. This sounds like good news.
Atalaya Mining (ATYM) has made AGM and Reserves statements, including emphasising “substantial, unexploited mineral resources in the vicinity of our modern 15 Mtpa mill and related infrastructure, together with a very prospective land package with world class exploration potential, offer compelling opportunities for continued growth of our company”. So what’s led to this statement?
Atalaya Mining (ATYM) has announced what it describes as “strong financial results achieved in Q1 and look forward to the rest of the year, with confidence”. How strong?
Atalaya Mining (ATYM) has been a favourite of mine for a few years now, but seems to be one of those shares which you rarely see mentioned on social media and the bulletin boards. It was formerly EMED. Ring a bell?
Over the past couple of months it has generally been a good idea to avoid resource stocks unless you’re either buying for the long term or are happy to try and trade high volatility, but one metal that is showing signs of strength is copper.
