Every year ShareProphets publishes twenty year-end tips, and these tips overwhelm the Most Read article leaderboard. So I have separated them out, then listed the most read articles and then the most listened-to Bearcasts over the past seven days. The most read non-Quiz, non-Tom article last week is Steve Moore with Plant Health Care – “Brazil approves TEIKKO… excited about the developing plans”. Er, what about the developing funding situation? at No 3 or No 14 including Bearcasts and year-end tips.

Right off the bat, the Tips of the Year are the 18 most-read articles last week. The most-read non-Tom, non tip-of-the-year is Revisiting My 2021 Share Tips of the Year which seems similar but is different because it’s all about Nigel Somerville revisiting his own tips. Hmm, that does seem similar. So, let’s give it to Festive Break: The view from ShareProphets’ Readers’ Windows – Stephen has exceeded the assignment from Kiuruvesi, Finland which is by me. That feels right.

In this week’s article, we review two trading updates; one that took place last week, and one expected next week. Firstly, we take a look back at publisher Pearson (PSON) and review broker and tipster sentiment in the lead up to, and following, its most recent trading update this Wednesday. We then look forward to an expected trading update from J D Wetherspoon (JDW) thisweek. Has tipster broker and sentiment changed in recent months, and what will tipsters be expecting to see in the pub chain’s latest announcement?

The UK economy suffered a tumultuous 2018, and it proved to be a particularly rough year for holders long in UK-listed shares: the FTSE100 suffered its worst year in a decade, while the FTSE All Share slumped 13% over the course of the year. The turbulence we’re experiencing looks set to continue into 2019 as markets struggle with mounting uncertainty. As a result “tipping shares has never felt more hazardous”, but there are potential rewards; Joanne Hart (Daily Mail) notes that “UK shares are widely acknowledged to be undervalued, presenting clear opportunities across the market”. I should point out that Tom Winnifrith and others think Ms Hart is useless and clueless.

The previous record number of tips captured and performance-tracked by Stockomendation was smashed in July, with over 1,600 new stock tips and broker ratings added to our platform across 23 brokers and 40 professional tipsters. Tip activity in July was the at its highest since April – coinciding with quarterly trading updates for many firms – representing an increase of 81% on the number of tips tracked during the same period last year. This surge in tips was mainly driven by brokers, with tipster activity remaining in line with previous months.

I do not know about you but I am starting to feel a bit Trumped out. And I actually wanted him to beat crooked Hillary. But the papers and TV screens are just so full of the man, what he is doing and what it means for us all. Is the Donald good for shares or bad? What about gold? Or bonds? Or house prices? Or the chances of England winning the World Cup? The truth is that no-one really knows any of the answers... except that England won't win the World Cup.

Before we get to the most read articles, I’d like to point out my tip of the year 2021. Before you dismiss it as the ravings of a scoffer, I’d like to point out my 2020 Share Tip of the Year was Flutter (FLTR). You could have been in at 9,300p and it’s 15,110p today. My 2017 UK Investor Show tip was an eight bagger (It was Versarien (VRS), still doubled if you held it to today), and my 2018 UK Investor Show tip, Red Rock Resources (RRR), also doubled if you held it to today. And as long as you didn’t count IOMart (IOM), which I also recommended last year, you would have been quids in. Watch for my new paid newsletter on ADVFN, Random Hot Coin Flips for only £25 per month, available on the first day of the second quarter.
