Disclosure: I own shares in one or more of the stocks mentioned. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from ShareProphets). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.
Shares in British American Tobacco (BATS) are currently trading at 3497.5p on a PE ratio of 14.9 and yielding 4.07%. I bought on the 4th August at 3,444.51p with all costs included, and am very pleased with the progress since then. I have a feeling it may well become one of my ‘favourite shares’.

So I suppose you would buy shares in a company selling shells to bomb the Palestinians to blood and bone and concrete dust.
One has to take a moral line somewhere and seeing our countries young people and children puffing their way to an early death involving misery and pain is enough for me to boycott Tobacco shares . Not to mention the cost of treating these idiots on the NHS with our hard earned taxes that could be put to better use .
Sleep well in the knowledge that you are profiting from others being condemed to an early death .

I’m sure some people do think like this- I’m interested to know how many.
Buying a relatively small amount of shares in a tobacco company is not the same as buying shares in a company which bombs people. I haven’t actually got any ‘defence’ stocks at the moment, but not for ‘moral’ reasons, just because I haven’t found one I like yet.
I have spent quite a few hours telling people I know not to smoke. In the end if they are going to do it they are going to do it. I do believe people have the right to make their own choices.
My mother is a health visitor and my sister is a doctor. They are the kind of people who if they bought shares wouldn’t buy them in tobacco companies.
The government gets lots of taxes in from tobacco- and it would be better for them to have that than to contribute to the large amount of illegal fags being sold in the UK.
The whole subject of the NHS is a complex issue- but I’ll simply state that a lot could be saved by not treating those who haven’t paid into it.
Personally I am fine with buying tobacco shares. If you’re not then that’s up to you.

We would have no tobacco industry if it were not for generations of politicians taking money off them for election campaigns in return for ignoring the suffering caused and cost to our health services .
What goes on in smoke filled rooms and all that goes with it . They are as bad as the American gun lobby and end up killing far more people.
