Tom

In Defence of Tom Winnifrith.

There are times when one has to speak up for those trying to shed light on the cess-pit that is AIM. That time has arrived as I write about Tom Winnifrith.

  1. Well said Dan- I am full of admiration for Tom’s courage and determination in standing up to some very unpleasant individuals who wish to remain clueless about the risks they are running by remaining invested in a clearly fraudulent company. They should be grateful for some much-needed financial education rather than issuing abuse and death threats.

  2. Well said Dan. Nothing excuses the threats and packages in the post. And – having been an AIM FD of 10 years, I do have some knowledge of how AIM and the City works – I would strongly advise private investors to take heed of what Tom writes and to thank him not abuse him for it. You may not like his style (although I for one enjoy it) but he will save you money in the long run.

Tom is probably right about QPP, I have not looked in any depth, but there is a bad enough smell about the whole thing to keep me away. I too have had the solicitors letters for my efforts to expose Tim Baldwin. The thing is though I am not setting myself up as the sheriff of AIM and I do not do what I do for publicity. I have had my share of abuse, but being proved right time and time again eventually silences all but the most deluded.

If Nomads, AIM Regulation and FCA (all of whom I have written to many times regarding the activities of Tim Baldwin) actually did their jobs properly, there would be no need for a sheriff of AIM. However as they do not, it would be great to have a proper sheriff of AIM rather than a pretend one, like Tom, who is only doing it as a publicity stunt.

I must admit though, having sllthered with the snakes in the cesspit himself for many years, Tom is at least well placed to recognise them all, but does he have the integrity to genuinely deal with all his old buddies, or does he just ask them along for a Q&A session where the questions are so mild and the spin answers not challenged in any meaningful way and most certainly not championing investor’s rights. If Tom wants to be taken seriously then he needs to give up the publicity stunts, stop all the double standards and genuinely step up to the plate as sheriff of AIM. The trouble is there is no money in it, hence why he will never actually live up to his own propaganda. However boy did he manage to extract maximum publicity for himself out of that tweet.

  5. Drunken

There is not a lot of money being Sheriff of AIM per se!

As I have explained before I do not fight other folks libel battles and I do not have time to go after everyone I want to.

My best bet is to nail a few bad guys ( the higher profile the better) pour encourager les autres.

I will watch your battle with interest. Now I must go fight mine.

    T

  6. David Russell

I love investing but found the last 10 years so difficult. I do not believe we am protected by the regulator and so any information on any company is of interest to me. I liked your write up Dan and I think Tom believes in what he writes but in the end people should do their own research then they cannot wish harm on people when they get it wrong. I have lost loads and I do not blame anyone and I would never wish harm based on a few quid. Like they say only invest what you can afford to lose and believe me you will lose it if you invest in the wrong directors.

  7. Drunken Sailor

    Tom,

Best of luck with QPP. However you are not being Sheriff of AIM nor champion of small investors – that is fine neither am I, but I do not claim to.

I feel that AIM has lots of good innovative small companies and if the UK economy is to thrive those companies need to be able to attract investment without fear of being tarnished by the others. Surely the battle you ought to be fighting is to get the Nomads, AIM regulation and FCA to live up to their responsibilities as well as encouraging all directors to live up to their responsibilities in accordance with the Companies Act 2006. When you do your Q&A sessions why don’t you ask some probing questions about decisions they have made that have turned out to be dud and ask them about whether they did appropriate due diligence, or ask them questions about related party transactions with regard to whether they were truly in the best interests of all members. In your Q&A you did with Tim over CTFA back in Jan (after the Stephen Voller link up had been announced but you did not mention that then you left it to someone else about a month later to do that) you said you would be back to see how things had gone in a few months. Perhaps you should get both Tim’s back in and give them a real Q&A grilling, or does the fact that they both coughed up to have stands at UK Investors show make them immune to any real sheriff / champion of small investors questioning?

  8. Juicin Drumroll

“What i would like you all to consider is what if QPP is a bonafide company with real revenue and profits.”

    Hmmmm, let me consider that………………

    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!

    Good one!

    Nah, it’s not.

  9. Kb
The accounts for QPP have not shown them to be above board to date. Quite the opposite infact . What planet do you inhabit ? It sure aint planet earth . If the next set of figures are good it will be because of more creative accounting . How many red flags do you need ? Have you a vacuum for brains ? Much of the revenue is not real . It will have to be written off the books in the future. Thats why there is no cash to speak off . Cant you understand ? There is no bloody cash !!! Thats cos they aint really selling much and they aint actually getting paid for what they sell with real cash from non subsiduaries. Are you so thick that you cant get it ? Day after day you bleet on needlessly . Just sell your bloody shares and put them in something that is real and growing sustainably . For goodness sake . You are driving everyone nuts with you vacuum stupidity . Its to much for any mere mortal to bear .

  10. Drunken

I reckon there are 300 PLCs on AIM that merit scrutiny. You are right the Nomad system does not achieve this.

I am not superman I cannot go after them all. So I pick my targets.

You have your obsession and it has involved lawyers letters. I sated well before you started plaguing this website with your posts that I have a golden rule – do not wade into other folks fights.

I have criticised CTFA when it came to my attention ( re Voller). Tim Baldwin gets no special favours from me as he has a stand at UKI.

I just do not have time to go after 300 companies at one time.

Incidentaly someone else dubbed me The Sheriff of AIM. I like it as I think I do good vigilante work. I have forced 3 chairman out in 10 months. I have forced several companies to issue RNS statements after I exposed them.

As I said you can fight your fight I will fight my fights. I am not going to breach a publicly stated rule just because you insult me.

I have a job to do so I am not going to waste much more time answering you every post.

    Best wishes

    Tom

  11. Drunken Sailor

    kb,

Before you bought in recently at £1.68, I take it you did thorough research and know that Tom is wrong and therefore you do not need to “hope QPP results are robust”. I only had a very quick look at thier annual results and an P/E of nearly 100 puts me off straight away. The other thing I can’t get my head round without a lot more research, which I can’t be bothered to do as I am already put off by the P/E is how the “profit” matches with the nearly £9m cash outflow from operating activities. Good on you for sticking with the research and really getting to the bottom of it all before you put your hard earned cash in – you did do the in depth research needed didn’t you, including looking at the track record of all the characters involved. It is fair enough to ignore what other are saying provided you have done your own research properly in order to make your own investing decision -I always advise everyone, whether they are thinking of buying or selling to do that. I am sure those who sold also did sufficient update on their original research before they sold and were only guided by the points and issues Tom and others have raised about QPP and their management.

  12. Drunken Sailor

    Tom,

No need for a response. I agree you do good vigilante work as you select targets based on your own agenda – that is fine go get em. However that is not how a Sheriff or genuine champion of small investors works – that is fine go get em, but you should therefore play down the whole sheriff bit as it is not an honest reflection of what you do, even though you make like it.

I look forward to your next articles on TXO and CTFA, did you ever cover RAM or was that dead and buried before you switched sides.

  13. Drunken

Switched sides? I think you mean changed team albeit not at my behest. But I am glad to be part of a team where I can write what I like. At the old team my writings were restricted. So more fun here it was the best thing that ever happened to me although not much fun at the time

My agenda is simply to expose lies nail bad guys and push for reform. Am doing a piece now on Nomads which you will I think agree with.

But I cant nail all the bad guys - there are to many. Have to hope others will do it. We will get no help from nomads, the FCA or mainstream press.

I encourage all PIs to be vigilantes. No-one else will hold PLCs to account.

    Good luck

    T

  14. Drunken Sailor

    Tom,

Absolutely. I am only a PI and I only go after Tim Baldwin because I have shares in one of his companies and I have done in depth research over the years to really know what I am talking about. That does not make me obsessed with him anymore than you are obsessed with QPP and the characters there. We are both just using the time and knowledge we have to try to tackle some of the worst offenders.

I look forward to your article on Nomads. The problem is there is not enough money in it to do the job properly and if they are joint broker and Nomad they have a massive conflict of interest. I am not sure what AIM regulation’s excuse for being hopeless is. The FSA were useless so why should a name change to FCA make any difference? At some stage I will put in some FOI requests and then make some complaints about FCA, not that it will do much good.

  15. Tom, does exposing companies make you rich?

If not come join me and set up an oil company, where we could raise almost $45 m from investors for free.

    Please reconsider

  16. Brokerman dan lost a lost of people a ton of money on tower a few years ago, with his false, repeated claims of an oil strike. Not sure if anyone would want to be backed up by this guy

  17. Kb is like Boston Utd vs choose a premier league team. Just sing louder! I continue to refer you to Mulford and Comiskey, Alfred C Rapport, Ian Griffiths, Stern Stuart, even the dated Terry Smith. Or Ladbrokes.

  18. Oh yeah and Shilit: Financial Shenanigans. Easy read but about 300 pages. Might take you way from the screens for a couple of years. One day Silverstone and Sheetz: Forensic Accounting for NON EXPERTS. Did I say that?

  19. Don’t think that too many of us would be prepared to take the abuse that TW suffers in the the course of a normal working day!

Do i always agree with his style or the way he tackles some of the AIM “bad boys” – er,no, but i do take my hat off to him for the way he has bounced back after professional set backs and for his determination to highlight the shortcomings/dishonesty of some others out there in the market – that surely is something which benefits us all, whether we agree with his conclusion or not?.

Whether you share his views or not,he is always worth a read & usually generates entertaining feedback ! As for share tips/recommendations,we can all make our own mind up,based on all the facts we have, whether they suit us or not.

    So,from me,for what it’s worth,-keep it rolling Tom!!

  20. Two things:

The author’s suggestion that a threat was made – no, it wasn’t. With such an inability to understand what a threat is (and what it is not), I’m not inclined to seriously consider the rest of the article.

Secondly, Drunken Sailor’s comment that QPP has a P/E of 100! Close – it’s currently less than 6 (ttm) and forecasted to be less than 3 in 2014.

I can’t begin to reconcile the stupidity of the aforementioned two.

  21. Drunken…. QPP has a PE of 100 – really?
H1 results showed 30p eps, assume they do the same in H2 at 168p thats PE of 2.8
Love to see your maths making it 100

  22. Presumably investors buy shares in companies with their eyes open. If the company ends up going down like the Titanic, whose fault is that? Tom’s? Dan’s? The Investor? Simples.

  23. J P Spaghetti

There’s so much bullshit in the world you all ought to be grateful for someone like TW. And yes – I’ve had a few. And I’ve just heard the awful news about Robin Williams. “Oh captain, my captain…”.

Fuck off and appreciate a sheriff who gives a flying…sorry – too pissed and pissed off (no worries if this isn’t published – free speech isn’t a free for all, after all!). But Robin Williams? Here’s to Pam Dawber. RIP Mork. Very sad.

  24. Tom has the rare kind of courage often described as ‘moral’. The courage of the whistle blower. Most people do not have much of it and that’s how politicians in my lifetime have caused so much damage. It’s easier to keep a low profile and hope for the best. I am guilty of this as are most folk I suspect. I admire someone willing to risk trouble in order to expose what ought to be exposed.
