Yesterday my colleague Gary Newman argued HERE that at 66p shares in blinkx (BLNX) were a buy. I respect Gary but disagree with him, this company is not worth £264 million. The shares remain a sell.

I commented on the same article. I haven’t followed every twist in the Edelman saga but it drew the company to my attention. Much like MMX (nee TLDH), I can’t understand why they’re considered a great hope.
It seems to me that if you want to create a serious concern in online advertising, then you have three options:
1. Go large. Get your advertising mechanism integrated into something everyone already uses. Unfortunately for the budding startup, what this really means is ‘be Google already’, or to a lesser extent Facebook. It’s mostly sewn up and consolidated into a few very strong vested interests. Even Apple haven’t made a success of their go at it.
2. Go niche. Concentrate on small but high profile opportunities, like ads within a group of very popular mobile games. Advertisers will pay because you have a well targeted captive demographic.
3. Technical innovation – do something special that gets you bought by the big players. Go back in time and invent GMail scanning or Google Glass. I don’t know, beam targeted adverts into specific people’s heads using directed sound. Wishy washy software frameworks ain’t it.
Everything else is a waste of time; why would an advertiser bother with the also-rans? Blinkx seem to be engaged in some sort of late 90s to mid 2000s era startup-esque hyping up of their platform, with what seems to be subprime technology and what are definitely subprime partners (Lycos, anyone?). That’s without mentioning their toxic hangover of a malware business.
I can’t really understand why anyone familiar with the Internet or software would buy into it. To me it doesn’t pass even the most benevolent Dragons Den style litmus test. As ever, I might be wrong, but noone’s explaining why.

Hi Tom,
How do you come up with your Quindell share price target of less than 45 p?
Thanks for explaining!

I expect QPP to follow the trajectory of TIG and predict vast write-offs of goodwill and accruals and trade receivables in due course. This will be like TIG in the Terry era.

Afternoon Tom
Any views on the shorts being closed out by Hendersons and BlackRock recently on Globo ( closed out to a level below the required amount needed to report to the FCA). Change in sentiment I reckon. The 10,000 Australian contract shows progress on hitting the bigger contracts. thoughts ?
cheers

Tom,
Thanks for covering something other than QPP. What do you think about the recent acquisitions that BLNX has made? From my own research I think that the direction taken toward mobile advertising is very promising.
Also the cash in the bank is lower due to said acquisitions no?
I don’t hold the share but I’ve long been interested and given he recent stability I’m considering entry.
All the best,
TWB

You are vindicated, Tom, BLNX down 27% this morning
