Disclosure: I own shares in one or more of the stocks mentioned. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from ShareProphets). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.
My father originally advised me that Sainsbury’s (SBRY) was a good buy at 315p. “In the long term they’re good value at this price.” I did my own research, saw that the PE was low and the yield attractive. I didn’t have any shares in the supermarket sector and never had, so it was good from a ‘diversity’ view I guess. I bought the share.

Emotions , Emotions ……………….. My biggest losses in 30 years have all been conviction investments on long trades. When shit hits the fan you cant bare to sell and hang on way too long .
All my very big wins have been trading short term of shares that are not investment grade material . Trades lasting as little as a day through too a couple of months . Huge winners for me have been junk like Cupid , Blinx , Wsg ,Qpp etc . Biggest losers by a long way lloyds bank , Rbs ,
My best conviction play in recent times is LGO and still running albeit top sliced .
Just pointing out there is more than one way to skin a cat and your own psychology and trading comfort zones must play a big role in choosing winning strategies .
I could never go for seven years with out selling a share . You cant take it with you and I like spending the gains on boys toys and the like too much . Otherwise what is the point .
I enjoyed the program on telly the other night about trading which featured an investment club of old men all aged over 70 . They gave up investing and swapped to trading because investing was just too boring and they had nothing to discuss at thier weekly meeting when previously operating choose and hold strategies . They were living for the next trade at 70 plus ……….. keeps you young .
