Hello, Share Swipers. Where would we be without power cords? Your kettle, computer, telly, shaver, washing machine and all the big-time essentials of modern life would be useless. Which brings me to Volex (VLX).

Having been just above 40p, a June results announcement emphasising “strong cash generation and returns to a net cash position. Restructuring activities and tight cost control contribute to an increase in underlying operating margins” saw shares in power cord and harness assemblies company Volex (VLX) rise over the next month to comfortably above 60p. They are currently though back below this level after AGM and strategic partnership announcements…
Having previously concluded it understandable that they remain below 40p, I note shares in Volex (VLX) currently rising above this level on the back of a “Trading Statement” announcement…
Power cords and cable assemblies company, Volex (VLX) is “pleased to report that underlying profitability has been maintained at prior year levels reflecting the actions that we have taken to address the continuing decline in revenues from several of our larger customers”. Hmmm…
November-announced interim results from power and data cabling provider, Volex plc (VLX) noted “tough” trading conditions, but also that “several significant new projects expected in H1 FY2016 have been deferred into H2 FY2016 including the roll out of a new product from our largest customer. We are already beginning to see the benefits of these projects in the second half”. Today we have that “expected demand for both existing and new products from our largest customer was less than expected in the second half of the year”. Uh oh…
I have noted before on a number of occasions that Volex is obsessed with spin and share price promotion but that its market cap (£59 million at 65p) is just a total Rum and coke. A grotesquely misleading RNS today only highlights the big problem with this enterprise: (lack of) cash generation.
To lose one director in December is unfortunate but to lose two looks like carelessness but that is what Volex (VLX) managed, parting company with its FD after just 18 months in the job and with a well-respected NED – with immediate effect - on New Year’s eve. The truth is that this is just not a very good company - my pal Paul Scott put it more succinctly the other day in an enthusiastic daily Stockopedia report. At 70.5p, capitalised at £64 million it is a slam dunk sell.
I previously wrote on shares in power and data cabling provider Volex plc (VLX) in February – noting early signs of the business recovering but that I’d want further, solid, evidence that the transformation plan is delivering before considering an investment at the then approaching 120p per share (see HERE). I update in the following with the shares currently little more than 80p, despite the company updating positively at its AGM last month.
This just looks all wrong. Even based on the numbers in the latest paid for PR piffle (I mean in-depth research note) from Edison, shares in Volex (VLX) are at 80p ludicrously overvalued. The very odd behaviour of the directors makes this smell even worse.
Shares in power and data cabling provider Volex plc (VLX) 'short-circuited' in November when the company announced “disappointing” interim results. It noted that these “highlight the hard work ahead for the new management team in turning around the business and setting it on a renewed growth path”.
