Eric Sprott is the best known name in resource investing. His latest comments are on the subject of Ebola and are utterly terrifying. They are a terrifying at a human level. If however you own shares in certain mining companies you should be double terrified. Yes, I hark back to African Minerals (AMI).

Have you tipped any plcs operating in the Ebola zone?
Whilst not doubting the gravity of this plague, I do suspect that WHO, Medecins Sans Frontieres and other worthies are milking it for maximum coffer replenishment.
The recent house to house search by 30,000 medical volunteers during the 72-hour curfew in Sierra Leone turned up surprisingly few new cases.

AMARA is tipped on this website. I believe Amara is in Sierra Leone. I have been wondering for a while if it is this particular elephant that has been holding back the share price.

Possibly they suffer from the sentiment but in their case revenues could be delayed rather than lost. If the plague isn’t fixed by the time Amara come to build their mine, we’ll need to start shooting them.

I have tried to clear out all my West African shares but if it spreads east I could be in for a right hammering on a couple that are under water .
Lets hope they get on top of it, for the victims sake ,rather than mine.

Perish the thought – but Tanzania is further away from the west coast than London is and has never had an outbreak of Ebola in the history of the world. With the Ebola borders now closed the outbreak seems to be contained geographically, if not yet numerically.

Keep up the scary stuff Tom. Have you bothered to ask how AMI is dealing with Ebola? No, thought not. In addition to the public health message, they have installed airport scanners at clock in/out. The initial non-infectious stage of ebola is a raised temperature. These scanners pick this up. Don’t know if any of their staff has yet been picked up but none has been reported. In addition, most of their people live on site. A few live in the surrounding villages but there have as yet been no reported cases. With most of the country in effective lockdown, and cases concentrated in the large cities, the chances that AMI will have to close due to an outbreak are remote. Also, SL govt is highly unlikely to close its largest foreign currency earner.
