A great piece Malcolm and probably one of the most important articles published on this site, that is very relevant to the less experienced trading Aim .
I can remember first trading Aim and trying to do it with 5-7 holdings in a manner one might trading the FTSE with blue chip “long” shares . What a disaster those first couple of years were . The steady losses punctuated by the odd multi bag . After a couple of years I fathomed out this was not a profitable strategy on Aim . Now , like you I guess , I have a large port of about 25 Aim shares and another 25 on a watch list that I would be very prepared to put money into . These “spares “ get swaped in and out as the fortunes of the “chosen ones” ebb and flow with the business cycle and sentiment . I monitor success on total port value rather than individual shares . When a share gets to the top of its “aim cycle of sentiment “ it gets swaped for one of the waiters at the bottom of their “hog cycle” . Choose and hold it aint , but exciting and interesting it is . Share profits is a great source of new material for my “waiters” and saves a huge amount of leg work on research . I have had some stonking tips from you guys and the odd duffer …….. but …….. and its a big but , even the duffers have not lost me much money . Rather they just sat stagnating until I got bored . Success in this game is all about eliminating losses early and having the courage to let your winners run ( so hard to do ) and I have to say that hearing confirmed from yourself the veracity of strategies I am currently employing gives one huge confidence knowing your many decades of success in trading . I see immense benefit in your pieces , particularly for those in their first ten years of trading …… dont retire !!!!
