Yesterday, I explained HERE why it was not just billionaire hedgies but normal folk like me who were far better off moving to Greece. The reaction from some demented lefties on X says it all. The UK has lost the plot. Essentially they want folks like me going away. @chippychippyz says:
That seems like a fair deal.
I assume you won't be coming back to use the NHS or our care services to pay for you as you get old, sick and frail?
Ends.
Here’s the rub. In between watching another episode of Blue Bloods and falling asleep last night I tried to work out how much tax I had generated for the UK. There is my PAYE & NI, the corporation tax paid by the companies created with my risk capital, the VAT those companies collected and handed over and then the PAYE and NI and Employers NI of those folks who gained employment at the companies I set up with my risk capital.
My guess is that over the years the amount of tax I have caused the UK to be able to collect is easily greater than £5 million. So I have done my bit to fund the lanyard wearing classes. What do I get in return? Let’s just stick to health. The last time I had an acute and painful condition, one that stopped me gaining more than an hour’s sleep a night, I was told by my GP that I would have to wait anything up to six months to get an appointment at, Lucy Letby’s old stomping ground, the Countess of Chester on the NHS. Or I could go private and be treated the next week.
Six months with acute sleep deprivation would have been at best torture at worst terminal so I went private. That is what I get in return for the £5 million. I reckon that even if I spend the next 15 years in Greece I have already paid enough tax to merit some care in old age or on the NHS back in the UK but would I actually get it?.
Moreover, having been treated, or rather not treated, by the NHS so badly last time and more recently for cataracts ( wait up to 2 years on the NHS or go private for immediate treatment) I’m pretty sure that next time I get sick I will have no choice but to go private again. And so why, before that inevitable event would I want to pay more tax in a country with a higher cost of living where house prices are raising less rapidly than they are in Greece just to rely on an NHS and care system I probably could not access anyway? But a system that I have already helped to fund on a scale that puts me in the top 1% of funders!
But folks like me are not wanted here so maybe we really should all just bugger off.
